Atkinson comes back into world top ten!

While the relentless world number one reign of Nicol David moves into its 52nd successive month in the November Women’s World Squash Rankings, her predecessor Vanessa Atkinson celebrates her highest ranking for more than two years in the new list. Last month Nicol David claimed her first title triumph in Mexico – but her success in the Torneo International Bicentenario Mexico, a new WISPA Gold event, took the Malaysian’s career haul to 49 Tour titles and her unbeaten run this year to 34 matches. But meanwhile, Dutch star Vanessa Atkinson is enjoying new lease of life in a distinguished career which kicked off in 1995. The former world champion (2004) first topped the world rankings in December 2005 before being toppled by Nicol David in August 2006. Complete rankings you find at the WISPA site.

Ramy Ashour takes Kuwait crown!

Ramy Ashour (pic front) claimed his 2nd Kuwait Open title after his victory in 2007. He beat reigning world champion Amr Shabana (pic back) in four games (9-11, 11-4, 13-11, 11-1). With this win Ashour took revenge on his defeat of the Kuwait world open final last year. This time Shabana took a tight 1st game and Ashour levelled with an easy 2nd game. The third was a brutal encounter as Shabana came back from 8-10 down into the tiebreak, which Ashour clinched 13-11. After this Shabana’s resistance was broken and Ashour eased through the 4th in less than 3 minutes. After taking the Hong Kong Open and the ROWE British Grand Prix titles, it’s Ashours 3rd Super Series Victory this year.

All-Egyptian final in Kuwait!

There were two very different games at the semi-finals stage. Amr Shabana (pic) and Greg Gaultier (pic) just battled it out for one game of 28 minutes high-intense squash, which was followed by an easy 2nd game. At 7:5 Gaultier had nothing left and conceded the match, while Shabana took the 1st final spot. The 2nd semi-final showed another 5 games by James Willstrop. After 82 minutes Egyptian world No.1 Ramy Ashour had the better end (11-7, 8-11, 11-9, 10-12, 11-7) and secured an all-Egyptian final in Kuwait. Shabana vs Ashour, that’s the replication of last year’s World Open final in Kuwait, which Shabana won in straight games.

Jenny Duncalf takes Carol Weymuller Open title!

World No2 Jenny Duncalf (pic) defended her Carol Weymuller Open title in some style, beating her England team-mate Laura Massaro in straight games (11-6, 11-1, 11-6) in the final in New York. Winner last year, Duncalf reached her 3rd New York final after beating Kasey Brown in 5 games. And Massaro had good reason to celebrate her unexpected appearance in the final after the 3rd seed also battled to a five-game win over fancied Australian Rachael Grinham, the 2nd seed. “I’m really happy to win here again, especially in three games,” said a smiling Duncalf after the final. “It’s nice to finish the trip on a high! Next stop Qatar!” exclaimed the champion after picking up the eighth Tour title of her career – but her first this year.

Willstrop downed Darwish to reach Kuwait semis!

England’s James Willstrop (pic front), No.6 seed in the Kuwait Open, had to fight 85 minutes to beat the Egyptian No.4 seed Karim Darwish to reach the semi-finals after 2004 for the 2nd time. His opponent will be world No.1 Ramy Ashour of Egypt, who had veteran Thierry Lincou in complete control, when he beat the Frenchman in straight games (11-4, 11-7, 11-4). Amr Shabana and Greg Gaultier will meet in the 2nd semi-final, after both eased through the quarters. Gaultier needed just 35 minutes to sweep English Daryl Selby of the court (11-6, 11-2, 11-1). Egyptian Shabana needed 11 minutes more to overcome Peter Barker (ENG) in the match of the two lefthanders.
