Donna dumps Waters in Cayman Islands shock!

In the 4 matches of day 1 at the Cayman Islands Open, Australian Donna Urquhart (pic ri) produced ‘one of, if not the’ best results of her career when she upset English world No5 Alison Waters (11-5, 11-9, 9-11, 10-12, 11-7 ) in the inaugural WISPA World Series event. An earlier tussle saw Amanda Sobhy, the 17-year-old US-girl, taking on Irish veteran Madeline Perry. In a dramatically close encounter, fifth seed Perry twice had to come from behind to topple the teenage qualifier 6-11, 18-16, 3-11, 11-9, 11-8 in 56 minutes. England’s No2 seed Jenny Duncalf was also fully extended in the last first round match of the day when she was taken to 5 games by Joelle King before beating the unseeded New Zealander 11-7, 2-11, 11-3, 9-11, 11-3. The world No2 will now face French number one Camille Serme after the 7th seed defeated Malaysian Low Wee Wern 11-8, 11-6, 8-11, 11-2. Marche marches to home success!

Gregoire Marche (pic) celebrated unexpected local success in the PSA de Baillargues when he beat fellow Frenchman Joan Lezaud (11-6, 13-11, 11-5 ) in the final of the inaugural PSA in Baillargues, France. Second seed Marche, the world No55 from Aix-en-Provence, reached the final as expected after beating England’s unseeded Ben Ford in the semi-finals. But the other semi provided a major upset when unseeded local hero Joan Lezaud, the 25-year-old world No 123, defeated top-seeded compatriot Thierry Lincou 9-11, 11-4, 11-4, 9-11, 11-8 in 55 minutes. “I’m managing the effort, I’m managing the pain when I lunge, so I’m forced to play accurate squash.I did what I could on the day – but all credit to Joan, who played excellent tactical squash, and I’m glad he is playing a final in his home club”, Lincou explained.

Darwish takes Kolkata crown!

In the longest three-game match either player had ever played, world No3 Karim Darwish (pic le) overcame fellow Egyptian Omar Mosaad (pic ri) in the final of the Kolkata International to win the PSA tournament in Kolkata. In a 91 minutes encounter Darwish took the victory in straight games (12-10, 12-10, 11-4). Mosaad, currently ranked 17 in the world, had lost in the Kolkata International semi-finals two years ago – but was not overawed playing someone ranked 14 places above him. The first 2 games went to tie-breaks, with Darwish coming out on top at crucial points of the games. “I am recovering from a hamstring injury and so I wanted to come here and win so that I can take a few point,” explained Darwish, after the longest recorded 3/0 match on the PSA World Tour since October 2008.

Perry Powers into World’s top three!

Madeline Perry (pic ri) leaps 3 places to a career-high No3 in the latest Women’s World Rankings to become the highest-ranked Irish woman of all-time in the April list published by the WISPA. The list is headed by Nicol David (pic, le), the Malaysian who marks her 60th month as world No1, with England’s Jenny Duncalf celebrating her 13th successive month in 2nd place. US teenager Amanda Sobhy moves up a single place to a best-ever No17. The 17-year-old left-hander from New York, the highest-ranked North American woman who became world junior champion last year. Matthew extends World No1 lead!

The Canary Wharf Classic title success in London last month has extended Englishman Nick Matthew’s (pic, le) lead at the top of the Dunlop PSA Men’s World Squash Rankings, according to the April list published today by the PSA. In an unchanged top ten, Matthew leads Egyptian rival Ramy Ashour, with fellow Egyptian Karim Darwish – winner of last month’s KL Open – in 3rd place, and England’s James Willstrop at No4. The first riser in the new list is David Palmer (pic ri), the illustrious Australian who is a two-time World Open and four-time British Open champion. Hisham Ashour, the 28-year-old Egyptian who beat Palmer to lift the National Bank Financial Group Open title in Canada, rises to a career-high No14. Top-10 (inc. points average): 1. Ghosal canters into Kolkata quarters!

Indian Saurav Ghosal (pic) led home hopes through to the quarter-finals of the Kolkata International after a straight games win over Malta’s Bradley Hindle in the opening round. The Kolkata-born world No24 prevailed 12-10, 12-10, 11-3 in 49 minutes to set up a clash with reigning world junior champion Amr Khaled Khalifa (EGY) who survived an 81-minute battle against fellow qualifier Ivan Yuen (7-11, 11-9, 11-6, 11-5). Top seed Karim Darwish led a quintet of Egyptians through to the last eight in Kolkata. The world No3 despatched South African qualifier Clinton Leeuw 11-5, 11-1, 11-5 and will now face compatriot Mohd Ali Anwar Reda, the world No27 who also overcame a qualifier when he beat Mexican Jorge Isaac Baltazar Ferreira 11-9, 11-5, 11-9.
