Shoukry and Khalifa in Alexandria final!

Andrew Wagih Shoukry (pic) and Amr Khaled Khalifa set up an all-Egyptian final of the Egyptian Circuit No2 after straight games semi-final successes in Alexandria. Shoukry, the only seed left in the last four, ended the giant-killing run of compatriot Mazen Gamal, the unseeded 24-year-old who removed top seed Karim Abdel Gawad in the previous round. But 20-year-old Shoukry was too strong for Gamal, winning 11-7, 12-10, 11-5 in 46 minutes to make his 1st PSA Tour final of the year, but the 9th of his career. Khalifa stormed to an 11-3, 11-6, 11-7 victory in 44 minutes over English outsider Olivier Pett. The 18-year-old Khalifa already boasts 4 PSA Tour final appearances this year, with title successes in 3. It was only three weeks ago that the teenager clinched the Egyptian Circuit No1 crown in Cairo – beating Shoukry in the quarter-finals.

Waller wipes out Koukal in Paraguay final!

England’s Adrian Waller (pic) masterminded his 2nd successive upset in the Paraguay Open when he lifted the title after defeating top seed Jan Koukal in the final in Asuncion. The 3rd seed had to overcome defending champion Rafael F Alarcon, the world No50 from Brazil. Waller, ranked 12 places lower in the world, battled for exactly one hour to beat the the Brazilian 11-6, 11-9, 9-11, 11-6. Jan Koukal, the Czech No.1, was celebrating his 3rd straight games win in a row in Asuncion when he ousted Argentina’s 4th seed Gonzalo Miranda 11-8, 11-3, 11-5 in the other semi-final. And when Waller stepped onto the court for the final, it was the 3rd time in a row that he had faced 27-year-old Koukal in a Tour event climax since November last year. It took underdog Waller 70 minutes to fight back from one game down to overcome Koukal 8-11, 11-8, 11-8, 9-11, 11-6 and collect the 3rd PSA Tour title of his career.

Advertising on the highway!

The organizers of the World Team Championships, which will be staged in Paderborn/Germany from the 21st to the 27th of August, secured an unusual advertising deal. A co-operation with the shipping company Hartmann Internal will commit that 30 trucks, almost half of the company’s fleet of vehicles, are showing the official banner of the World Championship. 15 of them are used nationwide. The other half is covering the area around Paderborn in a 100 km radius. The motivation for this spectacular campaign is easily explained: “As a company we are obliged to make Paderborn attractive”, explained the CEO of the company Andreas Hartmann, a former active squash player himself.

Finn Tuominen flies back into World top 20!

Flying Finn Olli Tuominen (pic) makes a welcome return to the world top 20 after a 20-month absence, according to the June World Rankings. An unchanged top ten sees England’s Nick Matthew maintain his 2011 grip on the world number one ranking – the 30-year-old taking up his 6th successive month at the top. But, after winning the Hurghada International on home soil last month, Egyptian rival Ramy Ashour has taken his PSA World Tour title total to 20, and narrowed the gap behind Matthew at No2. Meanwhile, fellow Egyptian Karim Darwish is in 3rd place and England’s James Willstrop at No4. After a slump in form which saw his ranking slip to 25, Olli Tuominen enjoyed a sensational run in Hurghada – where he upset both Frenchman Thierry Lincou, the world No8, and Egypt’s former world No13 Mohammed Abbas to reach the event’s semi-finals unseeded. June 2011 top 10 (incl. points average): 1 [1] Nick Matthew ENG 1,380; 2 [2] Ramy Ashour EGY 1,331; 3 [3] Karim Darwish EGY 959; 4 [4] James Willstrop ENG 897; 5 [5] Amr Shabana EGY 832; 6 [6] Greg Gaultier FRA 743; 7 [7] Peter Barker ENG 596; 8 [8] Thierry Lincou FRA 487; 9 [9] Mohamed El Shorbagy EGY 470; 10 [10] Azlan Iskandar MAS 432.
