Gaultier rises in PSA World Series standings!

Success in last week’s Qatar Classic in Doha has seen Greg Gaultier rise to 5th place in the latest 2011 Dunlop PSA World Series Standings. In his first major title success for more than two years, the Frenchman defeated England’s former champion James Willstrop in a 70-minute final of the 6th PSA World Series event of the year.

But, despite surprise early exits in Doha, England’s world No1 Nick Matthew and the 2nd-ranked Egyptian Ramy Ashour share the lead at the top of the standings, both with 375 points.

Egypt’s US Open champion Amr Shabana holds onto 3rd place, while Willstrop strengthens his grip on 4th place after reaching his first World Series final of the year.

Home hero Golan celebrates Santiago success!

Home hero Borja Golan (pic ri) delighted the crowd in Santiago de Compostela in Spain when he upset England’s top seed Adrian Grant (pic le) in the final of the Santiago Open. The triumph marks Golan’s biggest success since the former world No10, underwent major knee surgery in 2009. The 3rd seed, dropped just 1 game en-route to the final where he met Grant, the defending champion. Undoubtedly spurred on by the partisan crowd, Golan took the 14-12, 11-0, 8-11, 11-6 victory.


David and Gaultier took Qatar Classic crowns!

It was the No1 seed Nicol David (pic ri) from Malaysia who had the upper hand from the beginning of the women’s final. The World No1 never gave anything away to her Irish opponent Madeline Perry as David secured a 11-2, 11-7, 11-3 victory to retain her title in Doha. It was the 1st Qatar title for the Frenchman Greg Gaultier (pic le) after he overcame English World No4 James Willstrop in a thought 4 games encounter (11-8, 11-7, 2-11, 11-8). The French World No6 needed 70 minutes before he was able to lift the Qatar trophy and celebrate his big success.


Willstrop to contest Gaultier in Qatar Classic final!

It was Frenchman Greg Gaultier (pic le) who stopped Karim Darwish’s (pic ri) ambitions retaining his Qatar Classic title, as Gaultier beat the Egyptian in straight games 11-8, 11-4, 11-1. World No6 Gaultier will meet English World No 4 James Willstrop in the final, who overcame Australian fellow Stewart Boswell 11-8, 11-3, 11-9. Willstrop will aim for his 2nd Qatar title as he won in 2005. Gaultier’s best Qatar-result was in 2007 – runner up.


David takes on Perry in Doha final!

Malaysian Qatar Classic title-holder Nicol David (pic le) secured her chances to retain the Doha crown by holding off Rachael Grinham’s (pic ri) attacks to take a 4 games victory (11-6, 4-11, 11-6, 11-8) in 51 minutes. David will meet Irishwoman Madeline Perry, who ended the run of Egypt’s teenager Nour El Tayeb in a thought 3 games encounter (11-9, 19-17-11-9) which could have gone the other way very easily. The Malaysian World No1 leads 16 to one in the overall head-to-heads, which gives her the favorite role in the final.


No more upsets in the women’s draw in Qatar!

Following some major upsets in round 2 of the Qatar Classic, the remaining seeded players progressing through to the semi finals, as Malaysian World No1 Nicol David kept on winning to retain her Qatar title by beating Egypt’s Raneem El Weleily 11-6, 11-4, 11-8. Australian 3rd seed Rachael Grinham (pic ri) stopped the run of Englishwoman Emma Beddoes (pic le), as she took a straight games victory (14-12, 11-4, 11-7), only facing problems in the 1st game. Also 4th seed Madeline Perry from Ireland continued her 3-0 wins with a 11-8, 11-5, 11-9 victory over Malaysian Low Wee Wern. The last quarter final, an all-Egyptian affair between 17-years-old Nour El Tayeb and 2 years younger Nour El Sherbini was a repeat of the World Junior Open Final as El Tayeb defeated El Sherbini again (11-8, 5-11, 11-8, 13-11).


Darwish and Willstrop home in on Qatar final!

Karim Darwish and James Willstrop (pic ri), now the highest 2 seeds left in the Qatar Classic draw. Willstrop, the 4th seed from England, had to recover from a game down to beat his England team-mate Peter Barker (pic le) 6-11, 11-7, 11-4, 13-11. The 1st match promised another upset when unseeded Swiss star Nicolas Mueller raced into an 11-2 and 4-1 lead over Darwish, the 3rd seeded defending champion. The Egyptian settled, and dominated from that point on to win 2-11, 11-8, 11-5, 11-4. There was to be no further upset for Egypt’s Tarek Momen, who after his explosive dismissal of top seed Nick Matthew, found 6th seed Greg Gaultier a step too far as the Frenchman wins 11-5, 11-8, 11-7. An upset of sorts finally arrived in the last match of the day as Stewart Boswell got the better of fellow Australian Cameron Pilley in four games 11-8, 11-5, 4-11, 11-4.


Egyptian teenager on the run in Doha!

15-years-old Nour El Sherbini (pic ri) and 17-years-old Nour El Tayeb (pic le) produced the biggest upsets in the 2nd round action at the Qatar Classic in Doha. Sherbini overcame Australia’s 10th seed Donna Urquhart in straight games (11-8, 11-7, 11-5) after just 29 minutes. Fello Egyptian girl El Tayeb was even more surprising as she downed the English 2nd seed Jenny Duncalf in 4 games (11-8, 5-11, 11-9, 12-10). But also Englishwoman Emma Beddoes performed well as she beat 15th seed Joey Chan (HKG) 8-11, 11-6, 11-7, 6-11, 13-11.
