Anjema downs Palmer in US Open upset!

Dutchman Laurens Jan Anjema (pic le) upset 8th seed David Palmer (pic ri) in the 2nd round of the US Open to record his career-first Tour victory over the Australian former World Open Champion. “He was one of my idols when I was growing up, so to beat him for the first time in PSA is pretty special,” said the Dutch world No12, who will now join the quarter-finals in Philadelphis together with non-seed Mohd Azlan Iskandar, of Malaysia, Frenchman Thierry Lincou, Egyptian pair Amr Shabana and Mohamed El Shorbagy and the English trio Nick Matthew, James Willstrop and Peter Barker.


Darwish out, Rodrigues battles through!

The top half of the draw saw all the expected players progress, but the bottom half of 1st round action at the US Open did show some unexpected win, Colombia’s Miguel Angel Rodrigues (pic le) ran for his life to beat Egyptian Ali Anwar Reda (pic ri), coming back from 1/2 down to win in 83 minutes (11-9, 11-13, 3-11, 11-5, 11-5). Next surprise was the defeat of 2nd seed Karim Darwish by Malaysia’s Azlan Iskandar as Darwish conceding the match caused by an ankle injury after being down 1/2 games and 4-7 in the 4th game. Swiss Nicolas Mueller entered the last 16 as Jon Kemp was forced to pull out with a back injury.

El Shorbagy comeback denies Boswell in Philadelphia!

Former runner-up Stewart Boswell (pic ri) was denied a place in the 2nd round of the 2011 US Open when Egypt’s Mohamed El Shorbagy (pic, le) recovered from two games down to beat the Australian (8-11, 9-11, 11-7, 11-5, 11-4 ) on the opening day of 1st round action in Philadelphia. The 20-year-old now faces Englishman Tom Richards, a 7-11, 11-3, 11-9, 13-11 winner over Egyptian qualifier Tarek Momen.

US Open started with the qualification!

The Delaware Investments US Open, which is being held at the Drexel University of Philadelphia will start today with the 1st round of the qualification. One of the most interesting matches of 1st round qualification action will be Saurav Ghosal (IND) against Philadelphia head coach and former world’s No1 John White (SCO).


Ramy Ashour retains ROWE British Grand Prix title!

World No2 Ramy Ashour (pic le) repeats his victory from last year at the ROWE British Grand Prix in Manchester, when he beat World No1 Nick Matthew (pic ri) in the final (1-11, 11-3, 11-7, 11-4). In a controversy match with ups and downs from both players, the Egyptian got the better end after 67 minutes of play. Its Ashour’s 3rd big title in Manchester after winning the World Open in 2008 and the ROWE British Grand Prix for the last 2 years in a row.


Nick Matthew sets up a world class final with Ramy Ashour!

It was the world No1, Nick Matthew (pic le) who is going to follow Ramy Ashour into the final of the ROWE British Grand Prix in Manchester, as he overcame Egyptian former world No1 Amr Shabana (pic ri) in 4 tough games. After 54 minutes of play Matthew was able to set up the dream-final of the current two best players of the world.
