Jonathon Power celebrates 36th birthday!

They called him: “The king of deception and the John McEnroe of Squash”. Yes we are talking about former World no.1 and World Champion Canadian Jonathon Power. He was one of the few players who managed to retire as no.1, when he decided in March 2006 to step back from the PSA circuit. Today he celebrates his 36th birthday and the entire squash fan might wish him the best.

Egypt reclaims World Junior Team title in Quito!

In a dramatic climax at the Men’s World Junior Team Championship in Quito, top seeds Egypt beat defending champions Pakistan 2/1 to win the title for the 3rd time after 1994 and 2006. New world individual champion Amr Khaled Khalifa put the favourites into the lead after beating Pakistan no.1 Danish Atlas Khan (11-3, 11-9, 11-3). 2nd seeds Pakistan levelled when Nasir Iqbal overcame individual runner-up Ali Farag 11-8, 6-11, 11-7, 2-11, 11-8 in a dramatic 65-minute encounter. 17-year-old Marwan El Shorbagy decided the match, when he beat 18-year-old Pakistani Farhan Zaman 11-5, 4-11, 11-9, 11-9. Canada the 5th seeds celebrated their best finish since 1992 after upsetting 3rd seeds and former champions England 2/1 in the bronze medal play-off.

Egypt and Pakistan to contest World Junior Team Final!

Egypt and Pakistan will meet in the Men’s World Junior Team Championship final for the fourth time in a row. The two top seeded teams won the semi-finals in the Ecuador capital Quito in contrasting styles. Favourites Egypt defeated surprise semi-finalist Canada, the 5th seeds, 3/0. The win takes Egypt, champions in 1994 and 2006, into the world final for the 8th. Title-holders Pakistan had a harder time claiming their place in the climax, having to fight back from a match down to beat former champions England, the third seeds, 2/1.

Canada reach semis in Quito!

Canada upset fourth seeds India in the quarter-finals of the Men’s World Junior Team Squash Championship. With their 2/1 victory Canada ensured a top 4 position in the event for the first time since 1992. Canada will face now favourites and former champions (2006) Egypt, who brushed aside 7th seeds France 3/0, for a place in the final. Defending champions Pakistan and former champions (2000) England will meet in the 2nd semi-final. Pakistan, the 2nd seeds, crushed Germany 3/0, while England, the 3rd seeds, defeated outsiders New Zealand 3/0.

New Zealand charge into the quarter-finals in Quito!

11th seeds New Zealand stormed into the quarter-finals of the Men’s World Junior Team Squash Championship after defeating Venezuela 3/0 in the Ecuador capital Quito. Already guaranteed to record their best finish since 2004, New Zealand will now face 3rd seeds England in the last eight. England beat British rivals Wales 3/0. Egypt and Pakistan, expected to face each other in the final for the 4th successive time, eased into the last eight. Top seeds Egypt defeated Colombia 3/0 – while 2nd seeds Pakistan conquered Korea by the same margin. Germany also exceeded their seedings to make sure of a top eight finish. The 9th seeds beat former champions Australia 2/1.

Egypt favourite for the World Junior Team title!

After claiming gold, silver and bronze medals in the individual competition, favourites Egypt made a powerful start in the Men’s World Junior Team Squash Championship in Quito. With two 3/0 victories over Ireland and South Korea Ali Farag, Zahed Mohamed and Marwan El Shorbagy ensured a winning finish in Pool A. Egypt could easily afford to give World Champion Amr Khaled Khalifa break on the opening day. Also 2dn seeds and titleholder Pakistan, 3rn seeds England and 4th seeds India did not face any problems in the pool matches so far.

Top stars to enter the ROWE British Grand Prix!

After world no.1 Nick Matthew consents, four more top players have confirmed their participation in the ROWE British Grand Prix in Manchester. The two Frenchman former world no.1 Greg Gaultier (pic ri) and World Champion 2004 Thierry Lincou plus the two English stars James Willstrop (pic le) and Alister Walker have decided to attend from the 15th to the 20th in Manchester.
