Iskandar and Brown Reduce British Advance In Delhi!

Malaysia’s Azlan Iskandar (pic) and Australian Kasey Brown pulled off notable upsets over their opponents in the quarter-finals in the Commonwealth Games to claim unexpected places in the play-offs for medals in Delhi. Brown claimed her 2nd win over Northern Ireland’s Madeline Perry in two weeks when the 6th seed fought back from two games and 3-7 down to beat the 4th seeded world No5 5-11, 6-11, 14-12, 11-9, 12-10 in 84 minutes. In a match littered with interruptions, 6th seeded Iskandar beat England’s No4 seed Daryl Selby 11-6, 7-11, 13-11, 13-11 in 135 minutes – a time which included an injury break of 15 minutes while the Englishman received treatment for a dead leg caused by an accidental collision with his opponent. Willstrop and Palmer will meet in the Commonwealth Games quarters!

Australian squash veteran David Palmer (pic) claimed one of the last slots in the men’s Commonwealth Games quarter-finals at in Delhi, when he .beat his Malaysian rival Ong Beng Hee 11-4, 15-13, 11-5 in 55 minutes. Palmer won a bronze medal in 2002 and silver in the last Games on home soil in Melbourne – and is the only player who could win a third medal in a row in the Indian capital. Palmer will play England’s James Willstrop, the No2 seed who beat unseeded Canadian Shawn Delierre 11-7, 11-4, 10-12, 11-2. Matthew tested in Commonwealth Games opener!

England favourite Nick Matthew (pic) took his anticipated place in the last 16 of the Commonwealth Games Squash Championship in Delhi – but the world No2 was severely tested by unseeded Malaysian Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan in the 2nd round match in India. Matthew, competing in his first event since a fever forced his withdrawal from the ROWE British Grand Prix in England last month. Matthew overcame Adnan 11-6, 13-11, 8-11, 11-3 after 75 minutes. “It’s the biggest thing for us – it would be brilliant to win it – but there’s a long way to go yet”, Matthew said. Chris Simpson caused the first upset when he beat New Zealand’s 15th seed Martin Knight 11-8, 11-4, 12-14, 11-3 in 64 minutes.

Atkinson and El Hindi new US Open Champions!

Vanessa Atkinson from the Netherlands stopped the run of 17-year-old US-girl Amanda Sobhy who became the first US-player to be in the US Open final. Atkinson was able to build up a lead in every game and with her great experience she managed it always to stay ahead and beat Sobhy in straight games 11-7, 11-7, 11-8. The men’s final in Chicago showed an attacking Egyptian Wael El Hindi (pic) who tried everything in the book to win this tournament after a 2-years period of no PSA-title. Laurens Jan Anjema, Dutch No.11 of the world, was able to level to 1-all in games, but he could not avoid El Hindi’s dominance in the next to games (11-8, 5-11, 11-7, 11-7) to take his 7th overall PSA Tour final.

El Hindi and Anjema to contest US Open final!

Egypt’s Wael El Hindi (pic) and Dutchman Laurens Jan Anjema will contest the men’s final of the Metro Squash US Open after the 2nd and 3rd seed overcame their opponents in four-game semi-finals in Chicago. El Hindi faced Olli Tuominen from Finland in the first semi. The Finn dominated the first game, but El Hindi battled back to draw level before taking over control and won 4-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-6. Anjema, the world No13 took on Omar Mosaad, the No6 seed from Egypt. Left-hander Anjema built up a 2-0 lead before Mosaad fought back to reduce the deficit. Anjema regained his focus in the 4th and ultimately took the game to win the match 11-4, 11-9, 6-11, 11-6.

Sobhy and Atkinson in US Open final!

New York teenager Amanda Sobhy become the youngest player ever to reach the final of the Metro Squash US Open after beating Italian Manuela Manetta in the semi-finals. The 17-year-old eighth seed, who beat Ireland’s No4 seed Aisling Blake in the quarter-finals, despatched unseeded Manetta 11-3, 11-5, 5-11, 11-9 to reach the final of the WISPA event in Chicago. She will meet Dutch former World Open Champion (2004) Vanessa Atkinson (pic) who overcame Danish Line Hansen in straight games (11-5, 11-5, 11-0).

Tuominen and Mosaad made semis in Chicago!

Second seed Egyptian Wael El Hindi and 3rd seed Laurens Jan Anjema, from the Netherlands, had their opponents, the young Swiss fellow Nicolas Mueller and the experienced Egyptian Mohammed Abbas under control and reached the semis with straight games victories. Flying Finn Olli Tuominen (pic) and Egyptian Omar Mosaad toppled the top seeds. Tuominen overcame 4th seed Mohamed El Shorbagy from Egypt in four games (11-8, 11-5, 8-11, 12-10) and Mosaad beat No1 seed Frenchman Thierry Lincou in an 80 minutes encounter 8-11, 11-3, 13-11, 10-12, 11-8. Manetta topples top seed Grinham!

Italian Manuela Manetta (pic) scored the best win of her career when she dismissed Dutch top seed Natalie Grinham in the 1st round of the Metro Squash Women’s US Open. The straight games upset (11-6, 11-9, 11-8) takes the 27-year-old from Parma to an unexpected place in the quarter-finals of the $36,500 WISPA event in Chicago. Grinham is on a Tour comeback trail after giving birth to her first child in May.
