Home double victory in Kuala Lumpur!

The two Malaysians Nicol David and Azlan Iskandar made it a good day for the home fans in Kuala Lumpur. The victories in the finals have been contrasting. Iskandar was all time in control over qualifier Tarek Momen, while David has been under massive pressure. Her opponent, the no.2 of the world Jenny Duncalf fought 72 minutes before David claimed her 6th successive Malaysian Open title. After 2004 and 2007 Iskandar won his 3rd title and earned his 1st PSA victory of the year.

Momen took out no. 1 contender Shorbagy!

The Egyptian Tarek Momen (pic) was the star of the semi-finals at the Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur, when he came back from 1-2 games down to beat top-seed compatriot Mohamed El Shorbagy on extra points in the final game. In tomorrow’s final Momen will meet Malaysian Azlan Iskandar who kept control over Pakistan’s qualifier Farhan Mehboob. Nicol David kept Malaysian double victory hopes alive, when she beat England’s Alison Waters in four very tough games. David’s contender in the women’s final will be 2nd seed English girl Jenny Duncalf. The English top-seed ends the run of Egyptian qualifier Raneem El Weleily, when Duncalf won in four games.

World No1 Nick Matthew confirmed participation!

England’s newly crowned World No1 Nick Matthew (pic) has become the first top ten player to confirm his participation in the ROWE British Grand Prix, to be staged in the English city of Manchester from 15-20 September. The ROWE British Grand Prix will be the only PSA Super Series ranking event to be staged in Europe this year, establishes Manchester alongside other major squash destinations including New York, New Delhi, Cairo, Canberra, Hong Kong, Kuwait City, Doha and Dammam (Saudi Arabia). “This is a very exciting time for squash and the elevation of the British Grand Prix to Europe’s leading Super Series World Tour event is further evidence of the success of the men’s international circuit,” said Matthew, the sixteenth player in history to top the men’s world list and only the second English-born World No1.

Au and Hinds took Gold in World University Championships!

Hong Kong’s Annie Au and England’s Joel Hinds (pic) shared gold in the World University Squash Championships in Melbourne. Both overcame their opponents in straight games victories. Annie Au, who is ranked 16 in the world rankings, beats Emma Chorley (11-8, 11-5, 11-4), who is ranked 138 places below Au. Hinds ranked No.101 dominated Germany’s second seed Jens Schoor (11-6, 11-7, 11-2), who is ranked just 2 places below. “It was great – it’s my third time so it’s great to finally get that first place,” said the 23-year-old Hinds after his win.

Camilleri and Corren take Tasmanian titles!

Australia’s Lisa Camilleri (pic) and Mike Corren marked milestones in their careers when both won the final of the Tasmanian Open in Hobart/Australia. Corren collecting his 28th PSA World Tour title and Camilleri clinching her fifth WISPA World Tour title in a row this year. Corren beat compatriot Nathan Stevenson in straight games (11-8, 11-7, 11-5). Second seed Camilleri downed top-seeded Malaysian Sharon Wee in five games (11-7, 10-12, 7-11, 11-5, 11-6), coming back from 1/2 down to take her the 11th title overall.

Legends of Squash Tour announced!

The “Legends of Squash Tour” will officially launch in England, at the St George’s Hill Club from 3rd to 6th of September. Headlining the event will be arch rivals Jonathon Power and Peter Nicol, who will go up against each other in a competitive event for the first time in nearly five years. The exciting line-up of Legends will be completed by ex-world no.1 and the world’s hardest hitter John White, ex-world no.3 Simon Parke, ex-world no.2 Peter Marshall and British Open Champion (2000) David Evans. To complete an eight men’s event two wild cards have been passed to Tim Garner and Stacey Ross. After St George’s Hill the tour will go overseas to Maryland in the US.
