Matthew retains world No1 position!

Nick Matthew (pic), who last month became the 1st Englishman for 6 years to top the world rankings, retains his No 1 position in July. Matthew tops an almost unchanged top 20, ahead of Egyptians Ramy Ashour, Amr Shabana, Karim Darwish, Frenchman Gregory Gaultier and fellow countryman James Willstrop in 6th position. The only change is England’s Jonathan Kemp who made world No 20. Next big event which might have a major influence to the rankings, will be the Australian Open ($147,500, Canberra) in August.

Rohrmueller and Palaez took Pioneer Cup!

Germany’s Rudi Rohrmueller (pic) won the Pioneer Junior U19 Open, with more than 500 participants the leading junior tournament of the European Junior Circuit. Rohrmueller overcame England’s Nathan Lake in straight games. The girls U19 final was dominated by Columbian Catalina Palaez who beat Julianne Courtice from England 3:0.

Alexander and Camilleri Victorian Champions!

Zac Alexander (pic) and Lisa Camilleri were forced to work hard for their victories in the finals of the Victorian Open in Melbourne. In the men’s final, top seed Alexander came back from one game down to beat Australian compatriot Matthew Karwalski (6-11, 11-6, 11-9, 11-7). In the women’s final, Camilleri won the title for the third time with a triumph over Amelia Pittock (11-8, 11-9, 12-10).

Annie Au won in Paris!

The top two seeds fought for 52 minutes before favourite Annie Au (pic) took the title of the Des Pyramides Open final in Le Port Marly, near Paris. Au, the world No16 from Hong Kong, overcame England’s Dominique Lloyd-Walter in 4 games (11-6, 10-12, 11-7, 11-2) to take her 7th WISPA Tour title.

Dutch Dj does the Squashhit!

Dj Vree is an up-coming DJ from The Hague, his passion is music, especially a tough version of club/house music. His latest project called “Vree – Squashhit” was featured by Sebastiaan Weenink a Dutch squash pro. Weenink’s best world ranking was 139; at the moment he dropped down to 285 which does not reflect his skills he put into the video. This type of promotion is needed to take squash to the level where it belongs. Sit back and enjoy the “Squashhit”.

Amanda Sobhy: “Can life get any better!?”

Amanda Sobhy (pic) against Nour El Tayeb, that’s No.3 against No.4, a final with two 17-years-old girls against the seeding. The Egyptian Nour El Tayeb wanted to do once better than last year, when she became runner-up, but the American Amanda Sobhy had other plans on the day of her 17th birthday. She attempted to make herself the best present ever and become the first American ever, who won a world championship squash title. Sobhy recovered from a game down to win the world championship trophy in four games (3-11, 11-7, 11-6, 11-7). “I just won the world junior championships on my birthday, can life get any better!?”; said the new champion.

The best birthday present ever!

In the 1st semi-final of the Women’s World Junior Squash Championship US girl Amanda Sobhy (pic) made herself the best 17th birthday present, when she beat defending champion and top seed Nour El Sherbini in straight games (12-10, 14-12, 11-9). Sobhy is the first American to reach the world junior final in sixteen editions of the event. The second semi-final featured upset No.2, when 4th seed Egyptian Nour El Tayeb overcame Indian beauty Dipika Pallikal 15-13, 11-9, 11-9. After being runner-up last year, Tayeb makes her second consecutive final.

England is good at squash – come and join!

As yesterday has been a very sad full day for the English football fans, while they had to witness the highest defeat of the England team ever in a World Cup match, English squash star Nick Matthew had the only advice a No.1 could give: “If anyone wants to come and watch a sport that England are good at, come to the British Grand Prix Squash in Manchester, 15-20 September!!!”
