Willstrop outs the second World Champion!

After James Willstrop (pic le) beats David Palmer in the 2nd round of the Australian Open, the Englishman seems to be the man of today so far when he took out 4 times World Champion Amr Shabana (Egy, pic ri) in just 32 minutes in straight games (11-4, 11-5, 11-7). 2nd quarter-final showed World no.1 Nick Matthew coming back from one game down to overcome his English compatriot Peter Barker in a tough four-games encounter (2-11, 11-6, 11-5, 12-10). 4th seed Irish girl Madeline Perry produced almost the same result against English Laura Massaro to get to the semi-final. Alison Water from England followed Perry, when she beat New Zealand’s Jaclyn Hawkes without any problems (11-5, 11-9, 11-7).

Eight top seeds complete the quarters!

Also the last four matches of 2nd round of the Australian Open went into the favourites (four former world no. 1) direction. 5th seed Frenchman Greg Gaultier never let Englishman Tom Richards get into the match and Egyptian Karim Darwish always stayed on top of his 19-years-old fellow countryman Mohamed El Shorbagy (11-5, 11-9, 11-6). World no.2 Ramy Ashour of Egypt ended last Australian home hopes, when he beat Cameron Pilley in straight games (11-7, 11-3, 14-12) in front of the enthusiastic crowd. French veteran Thierry Lincou (pic) dropped one game, when he overcame Dutch Laurens Jan Anjema (5-11, 11-9, 11-4, 13-11) after getting back from one game and 2:5 down in the 2nd game.

Almost at the same time the first to games have been finished and both with the same result: 3-1. Thierry Lincou (FRA) beat Alister Walker (11-2, 11-8, 4-11, 11-6) and Peter Barker ends Hisham Ashours run (11-6, 11-5, 8-11, 11-9). Top seeds in form at the Australian Open!

First four matches in the 2nd round of the men’s draw of the Australian Open saw that all higher seeded players passing their opponents. World no. 1 Nick Matthew (ENG) did not face big problems beating Egyptian 11th seed Wael El Hindi in straight games (11-6, 11-7, 11-3), while 8th seed Englishman Peter Barker took advantage of compatriot Adrian Grant’s retirement after being 11-1 and 2-0 ahead. Four times World Champion Amr Shabana of Egypt was well in control of Malaysian Ong Beng Hee (12-10, 11-6, 11-8) and 6th seed James Willstrop (ENG, pic) destroyed Australian hopes by taking out former two times World Champion David Palmer in four games (11-1, 9-11, 11-2, 11-3).

After Urquhart’s upset three Aussies in the quarter!

In the battle of the beauties Australian Donna Urquhart charged into the quarter-finals of the Australian Open when she stunned 7th seeded Egyptian Engy Kheirallah in the 2nd round (11-6, 6-11, 11-2, 11-2). 2nd Aussie to make the quarters has been Rachael Grinham with a comfortable 11-8, 11-8, 11-9 win over England’s Tania Bailey. Team-mate Kasey Brown made it three Australians in the last eight when Malaysian opponent Low Wee Wern retired injured with Brown ahead 11-4, 12-10. Richards rocks Selby in Canberra!

England’s Tom Richards (pic) caused the biggest upset in the men’s Australian Open when he outlasted fellow countryman Daryl Selby, the 9th seed, in five games in the 2nd day of 1st round in Canberra. There were no worries for France’s former world no.1 Greg Gaultier, who demolished Muhd Asyraf Azan of Malaysia 11-7, 11-2, 11-2, or 4th seeded Egyptian Karim Darwish, an 11-9, 11-4, 11-7 winner over New Zealand’s Campbell Grayson. Frenchman Thierry Lincou ended the hopes of local hero Stewart Boswell when he beat the defending champion in four games 7-11, 11-6, 11-9, 11-5. The 2nd seeded Ashour reached the 2nd round with a brilliant display of attacking squash against fellow Egyptian Omar Abdel Aziz. (11-4, 11-5, 11-8).

Two upsets in the women’s Australian Open!

England’s unseeded Tania Bailey (pic) caused the biggest upset on the opening day of women’s action in the Australian Open when she overcame New Zealand 12th seed Joelle King to reach the last 16 of the $56,000 event. Malaysian Sharon Wee also claimed a significant win for her place in the 2nd round. The 32-year-old Wee ousted Denmark’s 15th seed Line Hansen 11-8, 11-5, 6-11, 11-3. After world no.1 Nicol David decided not to enter the “OZ Open”, world no.2 Jenny Duncalf of England took over top position. She demonstrated this with an impressive 11-2, 11-4, 11-6 win over reigning world junior champion Amanda Sobhy. All other seeds came through with more or less problems.

Australian Open: Beng Hee outs Walker!

Day one of the Australian Open is over. In the 1st match of the evening session, former world no.1 Amr Shabana of Egypt overcame promising Australian Ryan Cuskelly in four games (11-8, 11-7, 12-14, 11-8). Followed by the Malaysian Ong Beng Hee (pic), who caused the first surprise of the tournament when he upset 15th seed Englishman Alister Walker in a five-game marathon in 95 minutes 11-7, 14-12, 6-11, 6-11, 13-11. World no.6 James Willstrop defeated Australian qualifier Matthew Karwalski 11-9, 11-6, 11-3. Last match for today showed Australian David Palmer, the 10th seed, beat India’s Saurav Ghosal in four games (10-12, 11-6, 11-5, 11-9) after coming back from one game down.

First round start of the Australian Open!

The first 4 matches of the opening round of the Australian Open did not produce an up-set. Alls top seeds gone through without facing big problems. Only Egyptian Wael El Hindi lost one game against German Simon Rosner.
