Rosner reaches goal at US Open!

Germany’s Simon Rosner (le) achieved his goal to reach the quarter-finals of a PSA World Series event when he upset 8th-seeded Egyptian Tarek Momen (ri) 11-7, 10-12, 11-2, 11-9 on the last 16 round action in U.S. Open in Philadelphia.

Rosner will now face James Willstrop, the second seed from England who eased to an 11-7, 11-9, 11-4 win over 22-year-old Egyptian Karim Abdel Gawad.

2007 champion Matthew ended Campbell Grayson’s run, beating the New Zealand qualifier 11-5, 11-5, 11-6 to meet Londoner Peter Barker who overcome Joe Lee 8-11, 11-2, 11-6, 11-4.

Nicol David celebrates Carol Weymuller double!

Malaysia’s World No1 Nicol David (ri) ended unseeded French star Camille Serme’s (le) giant-killing run in the final of the Carol Weymuller Open in New York to win the event for the 2nd time since 2005.

The match notched up David’s 9th successive Tour win over the world No10 from Creteil – but Serme had enjoyed a sensational run in only her 3rd appearance in the event, upsetting higher-ranked English opponents Alison Waters, Jenny Duncalf and defending champion Laura Massaro in quick succession.

“I’m just so happy to win this tournament after so long,” said David after the 12-10, 11-2, 11-5 triumph which saw the 30-year-old from Penang go through the championship without dropping a game.

“I’m a bit disappointed to be honest,” said the 24-year-old France and European champion. “Even though she’s the world number one I wanted to do better than getting one game as that’s the best I have done against her!

Egyptian World No1 Ramy Ashour (ri) came back from 1:2 games down to step up the pace and snatch the San Francisco title in 5 tough games (11-4, 7-11, 7-11, 11-3, 11-2) from his French opponent and title holder Greg Gaulter (le).

It was “all squash fans anywhere could have asked for” said promoter John Nimick when asked about the final of the 2013 NetSuite Open Squash Championship – staged spectacularly at Justin Herman Plaza on the San Francisco waterfront, backed by views of the renowned Ferry Building and Bay Bridge.

Ashour & Gaultier in dream NetSuite final!

It will be the top two seeds that contest the final of the NetSuite Open after World No1 Ramy Ashour and second-ranked Gregory Gaultier prevailed in contrasting semi-finals at the San Francisco waterfront.

2nd-seeded Frenchman Gaultier despatched England’s World No12 Daryl Selby in straight games (11-4, 11-1, 11-3) in just 25 minutes by driving the ball to perfect length and capitalising on every loose ball. After victory which takes Gaultier into his third successive PSA Tour final, and the 53rd of his career, the 30-year-old from Aix-en-Provence said: “Yes, I like the conditions – not too hot and not too cold. And the audience is good to play for.”

In the 2nd and most eagerly-awaited match of the tournament, England’s World No3 James Willstrop (ri) gave Ashour (le), who celebrated his 26th birthday, an inspiring battle. Ashour’s 11-5, 11-9, 2-11, 11-7 win in 52 minutes extends his unbeaten Tour tally to 44 matches.

As Host and promoter John Nimick said on court after the match: “These are two of the finest athletes you will ever watch and two of the best sportsmen you will ever meet. San Francisco has truly enjoyed the best of squash.”

Daryl Selby showed that determination to win overrides friendship on the PSA World Tour when he upset England team-mate Peter Barker, the No4 seed, 8-11, 12-10, 11-3, 11-4 in the NetSuite Open to claim an unexpected place in the semi-finals in San Francisco.

Bidding to reach his second Tour final of the year, Selby will face defending champion Gregory Gaultier (ri) from France, who beat Germany’s Simon Rosner (le) 11-7, 11-6, 11-5 in 46 minutes of play.
