Two upsets in the women’s Australian Open!

England’s unseeded Tania Bailey (pic) caused the biggest upset on the opening day of women’s action in the Australian Open when she overcame New Zealand 12th seed Joelle King to reach the last 16 of the $56,000 event. Malaysian Sharon Wee also claimed a significant win for her place in the 2nd round. The 32-year-old Wee ousted Denmark’s 15th seed Line Hansen 11-8, 11-5, 6-11, 11-3. After world no.1 Nicol David decided not to enter the “OZ Open”, world no.2 Jenny Duncalf of England took over top position. She demonstrated this with an impressive 11-2, 11-4, 11-6 win over reigning world junior champion Amanda Sobhy. All other seeds came through with more or less problems.
