James and Emily Whitlock celebrate English Pioneer double!

Declan James (pic le) and Emily Whitlock (pic ri) celebrated an English double in the U19 finals of the Pioneer Junior Open in Cologne. James, the 18-year-old favourite, comfortably reached the men’s final without dropping a game – while his Belgium opponent Tom de Mulder conceded one game in the quarter-finals against German U19 Champion Valentin Rapp. In the final James dispatched De Mulder 11-3, 11-8, 11-9. With the English, French and European Junior titles to her credit already this year, Emily Whitlock came to Cologne as firm favourite for the women’s Pioneer trophy. The 17-year-old did not disappoint – romping through to the final after the loss of just 32 points in 4 rounds. But her opponent Maria Elena Ubina had battled through to the climax unseeded, after stunning upsets over the 6th and 7th seeds – and England’s No2 seed Brogan Lane in the quarter-finals. Whitlock was too strong for Ubina in the final, beating the 16-year-old 11-6, 11-4, 11-5.

Champion Ramy Ashour confirms ROWE British Grand Prix entry!

World No2 Egyptian Ramy Ashour (pic), one of the most exciting players in the world, will defend his title in September’s ROWE British Grand Prix which is one of the year’s 9 PSA World Series championships. The biggest event to be staged in Europe in 2011 will take place in Manchester from 19-25 September. 2 years after becoming 1 of the youngest ever World Champions in October 2008, Ashour returned to Manchester last September to win the 2010 ROWE British Grand Prix in style – beating home hope James Willstrop, the world No4 in a 4-game final. Ashour has already notched up 20 PSA World Tour titles – and in January 2010 topped the world rankings for the 1st time. “Ramy is one the game’s most exciting players, who attracts crowds wherever he plays,” said event promoter Paul Walters. “I’m delighted that he has confirmed his entry for 2011, where he is set to renew his rivalry with England’s Nick Matthew who replaced him as world No1 at the beginning of this year.”
