After she has failed in the 2009 and 2010 finals, it was the 3rd time lucky for Egypt’s Nour El Tayeb (pic) to take the Women’s World Junior Individual Title, when she overcame fellow Egyptian former champion (2009) Nour El Sherbini in 4 games in Boston, USA. “I’ve been dreaming about this for a long time,” admitted El Tayeb after her 11-5, 3-11, 11-7, 11-8 triumph in 42 minutes. “But I haven’t been thinking about winning or expecting to win when I’ve been on court, I’ve just been thinking about the match, the next point. El Tayeb’s success means that Egypt now boasts all 4 world junior squash titles – the Men’s & Women’s World Individual and World Team Championships.
Egypt’s former champion Nour El Sherbini (pic ri) upset title-holder Amanda Sobhy (pic le) in the semi-finals (11-5, 12-10, 11-9, in 30 minutes) of the Women’s World Junior Championship to deny hosts USA home success in Boston. El Sherbini, the 15-year-old 2009 champion, will face Nour El Tayeb, the 18-year-old who reached the final for the 3rd year in a row after despatching England’s Emily Whitlock in straight games (11-8, 11-3, 11-5, in 25 minutes). The climax will mark the 2nd all-Egyptian world junior squash final in 8 days, after Marwan El Shorbagy took on Mohamed Abouelghar in the men’s individual final in Belgium.
Emily Whitlock (pic), a 17-year-old from England in her maiden appearance in the Women’s World Junior Championships, stormed into the semi-finals in Boston, USA, after upsetting 18-year-old home hope Olivia Blatchford 11-8, 11-8, 11-7. Whitlock will now face Egypt’s Nour El Tayeb, the 18-year-old who is seeded to reach the final for the 3rd year in a row – but expected to win the title for the 1st time. El Tayeb saw off compatriot Salma Hany 11-8, 11-0, 11-4. The other semi-final will pitch 2010 champion Amanda Sobhy against the 2009 winner Nour El Sherbini. Sobhy, the 18-year-old who last year became the first US squash player to win a world singles title, defeated unseeded 14-year-old Egyptian Mariam Ibrahim Metwally 11-6, 11-3, 11-5. El Sherbini stunned the squash world 2 years ago when she won the title in India aged just 13 – becoming youngest world champion ever. The 3/4 seed beat fellow Egyptian Nouran El Torky 11-8, 11-3, 11-4.
At the 1st appearance at the Malaysian Open Frenchman Greg Gaultier took the title straight back home, when he was in full control of Pakistan’s Aamir Atlas Khan. With a straight games victory (11-8, 11-3, 11-3) Gaultier took after 43 minutes of play the 18th PSA title in his career. There are 35 titles more on Nicol David’s account after the women’s world No.1 overcame England’s world No.2 Jenny Duncalf 11-6, 12-10, 11-5 to take her 7th consecutive Malaysian Open crown.
Unseeded Pakistani Aamir Atlas Khan continued his giant-killing run in the semi-finals of the CIMB Malaysian Open to set up a meeting with French favourite Greg Gaultier (pic) in the final in Kuala Lumpur. After recovering from the loss of the opening game, the 20-year-old world No28 Khan defeated Australian Cameron Pilley 10-12, 11-6, 11-4, 11-9 in 54 minutes to reach the 10th PSA Tour final of his career. Meanwhile Gaultier, the world No6 in his maiden appearance in the event, chalked up his 3rd straight games win in the tournament when he beat qualifier Alan Clyne who had enjoyed one his most impressive recent Tour runs – making his breakthrough in the opening round by ousting 4th seed Hisham Ashour before overcoming a further Egyptian Karim Abdel Gawad.

Samantha Cornett (pic) picked up her 2nd title of the year as she won the Tasmanian Open in Hobart in Australia. On the way into the final, 3rd seed Cornett produced 2 straight games wins against Deon Saffery (WAL) and Samantha Davies (AUS) to overcome top-seed New Zealander Kylie Lindsay in the semis 11-1 15-13 7-11 11-9 in 34 minutes. Cornett’s final opponent Ahn Eun Chan from Korea was forced to play 16 games in 4 matches against Melanie Dunn (AUS), Elise Ng (HKG), Sarah Cardwell (AUS) and Lisa Aitken (SCO) to reach the final. Cornett was well in control of the final as Chan was only able to take the 3rd game. Afterwards the Canadian closed out the match to her 11-6 11-7 9-11 11-8 victory.
When Egyptian Marwan El Shorbagy (pic) became the new Junior World Champion, it’s the 3rd title to the Shorbagy family, as the elder brother Mohamed won in the years 2008 and 2009. Marwan made history, because it’s the 1st time in squash history that brothers or sisters took the world individual title. As 17-years-old Marwan is able retain his title next year on home soil, he may ad his name to Ramy Ashour and his brother Mohamed, who have been the only two players so far to win the junior crown twice.
