Abdullah advances in Kuwait!

Kuwaiti Abdullah Al Muzayen (pic) produced one of the best results of his career when he despatched Pakistan number one Farhan Mehboob in straight games in the opening round of the Jena International Championship to advance to the quarter-finals in Kuwait. Qualifier Al Muzayen, ranked outside the world top 100, took just 34 minutes to see off fellow left-hander Mehboob, the world No28 from Peshawar, 11-9, 11-9, 11-2. The toughest battle of the day saw 4th seed Omar Abdel Aziz take his anticipated place in the quarter-finals, when the world No43 from Egypt had to fight back from 2 games down before beating Malaysian qualifier Ivan Yuen 9-11, 1-11, 11-8, 11-7, 11-7 in 124 minutes. Simon Roesner as bus driver!

No worries, the best German squash player, Simon Roesner from Paderborn, did not change his profession. But his image is on a 12 meters long and nearly 12 tons heavy public bus in Paderborn, the city which hosts the 23rd Men’s World Team Championships. Roesner drives with the more than 250 horsepower strong vehicle through the city of Paderborn. Koukal takes Argentina title!

Czech champion Jan Koukal (pic le) survived his second successive 75-minute marathon in the Resistencia Open to win the inaugural PSA World Tour Challenger 10 event in Argentina. Less than 24 hours after beating Adrian Waller in a 5-game semi top seed Koukal faced Rafael Alarcon (pic ri), the 2nd-seeded Brazilian whom he defeated in 4 games in last year’s Cerdil Open final in Brazil. The top-ranked Czech player raced to a two-game lead before Alarcon stroke back to level the match by winning two tiebreaks. The Czech charged ahead to lead the final game – but this time there was no comeback for the Brazilian. As Koukal clinched his epic 11-8, 11-6, 10-12, 10-12, 11-7 victory, he also marked his the 18th PSA World Tour title of his career.

Koukal clings on in Argentina!

Czech Jan Koukal (pic) avenged 2 successive defeats by Adrian Waller in the last 2 weeks when he beat the Englishman to reach the final in Argentina. Waller looked set to claim a hat-trick of wins over the Czech as romped to a two-game lead in the semi-finals in Resistencia. 3rd seed Waller had 4 match-balls in the 3rd game, but top seed Koukal kept control as he took the game 16-14. After 75 minutes the Czech No1 clinched his sensational 6-11, 6-11, 16-14, 11-9, 11-8 victory. The win takes Koukal into his 4th PSA Tour final of the year, and the 27th of his career. Koukal will face Brazilian Rafael F Alarcon, the No2 seed who recovered from a game down to beat 4th-seeded American Christopher Gordon 9-11, 11-7, 11-9, 12-10 in 55 minutes. The semi-final success takes Alarcon, ranked just one place lower than Koukal into the 26th Tour final of his career!

Top 4 in Argentina semis!

It took England’s Adrian Waller 21 minutes to despatch local hope Robertino Pezzota from Argentina 11-3, 11-6, 11-4 to earn a place in the semi-finals of the Resistencia Open in Argentina. Waller bids to win his 3rd successive title in South America in 2 weeks. In a replay of May’s Cerdil Open final in Brazil and last week’s Paraguay Open climax in Asuncion – both of which he won in 5 games – 3rd seed Waller will now face top seed Jan Koukal. The Czech No1 needed 45 minutes to see off Argentinian Hernan D’Arcangelo 14-16, 11-9, 11-6, 11-9. Brazilian Rafael F Alarcon (pic) leads South American interest in the other semi-final. The No2 seed survived a lengthy 3rd tie-break game to beat Canadian Adrian Dudzicki 11-7, 11-4, 21-19 and will now face North American hope Christopher Gordon who battled for 90 minutes to overcome Welshman Peter Creed 11-13, 11-3, 11-9, 9-11, 11-7.

El Torky takes Alexandria crown!

Heba El Torky (pic le), 20, made her way into the final in Alexandria with a straight games semi-final win (11-5 11-4 11-5) over Egyptian compatriot Farah Abdel Meguid (pic ri). In the other all-Egyptian semi, the 17 year old 2nd seed Kanzy El Dafrawy needed 39 minutes to overcome Nouran El Torky 11-5 11-4 11-5. The final was a 59-minutes affair which could turn either way. But in the end El Torky had the edge over her younger compatriot took the title in 4 games 11-4 11-9 9-11 11-4. The Alexandria crown marks El Torky’s 2nd title in 2011 and her 5th in her career.

Khalifa crowned Alexandria Champion!

Underdog Amr Khaled Khalifa (pic) brushed aside 4th-seeded Egyptian compatriot Andrew Wagih Shoukry in the final of the Egyptian Circuit No2 to win in Alexandria. Khalifa, the 18-year-old world junior champion and world No59, made it three in a row since March when he beat 12 places lower ranked Shoukry 11-7, 12-10, 11-5 in 40 minutes to lift his 2nd successive Egyptian Circuit trophy. The success marks Khalifa’s 8th PSA World Tour title triumph in only his 9th final – all since February 2009!
