A 4th successive win in the qualifying rounds of the WSF World Cup takes Egypt, the top seeds, into the semi-finals in Chennai, India. After despatching outsiders Sri Lanka 3/0 earlier in the day, the favourites took on 4th seeds France in a crucial tie to determine supremacy in Pool A. In little more than an hour of play, world No2 Ramy Ashour beat the French number one Yann Perrin, Raneem El Weleily outlasted Coline Aumard, and Karim Darwish, the world No3, defeated Gregoire Marche to consolidate Egypt’s position as group leaders. 2nd seeds England were given a scare by 7th seeds Mexico when world No8 Laura Massaro went down in five games to Samantha Teran, ranked 9 places lower. World No7 Peter Barker had put the defending champions ahead with an 11-3, 11-5, 11-5 win over Mexican No1 Cesar Salazar. Underdogs India, the hosts, stretched title-holders England all the way in the World Cup before going down to the 2nd seeds in the first qualifying round in Chennai. In the opening match in Pool B, Indian number one Saurav Ghosal (pic) faced James Willstrop, the world No4 against whom he had never previously taken a game. The pair train together in Pontefract, England. Spurred on by a loyal local crowd surrounding the all-glass showcourt at the Chennai centre Ghosal made Willstrop’s life very tough before the Englishman clinched the 12-14, 11-3, 11-5, 10-12, 12-10 victory after 61 minutes. 2nd seed Englishman Jonathan Kemp (pic) destroyed all home hopes when he overcame US-boy Julian Illingworth in 5 tough games in the KIG Open final in Los Angeles. The world No22 was 2 games ahead before Illingworth, the world No34, clawed back to level the match. In the final game the Englishman had the better start and never allowed the American to come back. The 11-7, 11-8, 7-11, 7-11, 11-6 victory was Kemp’s 2nd win in 2011 and his 12th PSA Tour title in his career.

Belgian veteran Stefan Casteleyn (pic) maintained his giant-killing run on his home courts at the Los Angeles Athletic Club when he scored his 2nd upset in the KIG Open to earn a surprise place in the semi-finals. The 37-year-old former world No7, recovered from 1/2 down to upset 4th-seeded Egyptian Omar Abdel Aziz 11-8, 1-11, 8-11, 11-5, 11-8. Casteleyn, ranked 391 in the world, will now take on England’s Jonathan Kemp, the only seed left in the draw. Kemp, the n2d seed also ousted an Egyptian, qualifier Amr Khaled Khalifa, 11-2, 11-9, 8-11, 11-6. Semi-final line-up: Julian Illingworth (USA) v Ryan Cuskelly (AUS); [2] Jonathan Kemp (ENG) v Stefan Casteleyn (BEL).

Pakistan teenager Danish Atlas Khan (pic) celebrated his 3rd successive PSA World Tour title triumph in Iran in a month when he won the Norooz Squash International in Tehran. 3rd seed Khan made his breakthrough in the semi-finals where he beat top-seeded Egyptian Mazen Gamal, the champion in 2009. The 17-year-old from Peshawar then faced the title-holder Bader Al Hussaini in the final after the 4th seed from Kuwait had overcome 2nd seed Waqar Mehboob, from Pakistan, in the other semi-final. “I really want to thank Allah for winning 3 tournaments here – also thanks to my father and my coach Atlas Khan, and my family, who really support me,” said the jubilant champion after his victory.

Egypt’s Omar Mosaad (pic) claimed his place in squash history when he won the 1st Tour event ever to be staged in Turkey. But the 22-year-old from Cairo was stretched for 93 minutes by Italian opponent Davide Bianchetti before winning the Avrupa Konutlari International in Istanbul. By contrast, top seed Mosaad raced through his semi-final encounter, despatching unseeded Frenchman Fabien Verseille in straight games (11-6, 11-4, 11-7 ) in just 28 minutes – while 3rd seed Bianchetti was taken to 4 games (3-11, 11-5, 11-4, 11-5) before overcoming Danish qualifier Rasmus Nielsen in 48 minutes. It was 1:1 after the first two games before world No16 Mosaad had the better end in the following 2 tie-breaks to take the 11-8, 8-11, 13-11, 12-10 victory. Mosaad was celebrating his 6th Tour title of his career.

The English current world open champion Nick Matthew (pic) stays on top in Richmond, when he beat Egyptian world No.2 Ramy Ashour in 5 entertaining games. With this victory Matthew regains his 2010 North American Open title. As the Englishman managed to built up a 2 games lead, the Richmond crowd saw the Egyptian striking back to level the match. It was Matthew who was able to open up a 3 point gap and saved it until the end (11-9, 11-5, 8-11, 8-11, 11-6).
