Day one of the Australian Open is over. In the 1st match of the evening session, former world no.1 Amr Shabana of Egypt overcame promising Australian Ryan Cuskelly in four games (11-8, 11-7, 12-14, 11-8). Followed by the Malaysian Ong Beng Hee (pic), who caused the first surprise of the tournament when he upset 15th seed Englishman Alister Walker in a five-game marathon in 95 minutes 11-7, 14-12, 6-11, 6-11, 13-11. World no.6 James Willstrop defeated Australian qualifier Matthew Karwalski 11-9, 11-6, 11-3. Last match for today showed Australian David Palmer, the 10th seed, beat India’s Saurav Ghosal in four games (10-12, 11-6, 11-5, 11-9) after coming back from one game down.
