The opening round of the Malaysian Open produced a series of upsets in Kuala Lumpur. The Egyptian qualifier Raneem El Weleily (pic) defeats the third seed Rachael Grinham in the women’s draw (12-10, 14-16, 11-9, 12-10). Laura Massaro, the No8 seed had to call upon all her experience to defeat 18-year-old Indian qualifier Dipika Pallikal (9-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-8, 11-9). Two further women’s upsets saw Tour stalwarts Natalie Grainger and Madeline Perry make unexpectedly early exits against unseeded Low Wee Wern and Camille Serme. Only upset in the men’s draw was the defeat of Australian’s Cameron Pilley by the Pakistan qualifier Farhan Mehboob.
