Abbas and Mueller downed seeds in Chicago!

Egypt’s former world No13 Mohammed Abbas scored another notable win in his comeback bid after a long injury layoff when he beat 5th seed Alister Walker, the world No17 from England, to reach the quarter-finals of the US Open in Chicago. With this 3-2-victory (3-11, 11-4, 11-7, 10-12, 11-9) Abbas reached the quarter-finals of a major PSA event for the first time in more than two years. Swiss fellow Nicolas Mueller (pic) produced the 2nd upset in Chicago when he downs Hisham Mohd Ashour, the No7 seed from Egypt, 11-8, 9-11, 8-11, 11-8, 11-7. All other top seeds where able to reach the quarter-finals. Reda takes Kuwait title!

Mohd Ali Anwar Reda (pic) marked his 10th title of his career when he won the Jena Real Estates Open No2 in Kuwait. The world No28 from Cairo was taken to five games by unseeded Abdullah Almezayen in the quarter-finals before beating the Kuwaiti, ranked more than 70 places lower, 8-11, 11-8, 11-3, 5-11, 11-3. It took four games for 21-year-old Reda to overcome 7th seeded compatriot Andrew Wagih Shoukry in the semi-finals before he faced unseeded Egyptian Ali Farag in the final. 18-years-old Farag took Reda to five games before the favourite finally emerged triumphant 11-2, 8-11, 11-9, 8-11, 11-3 after 63 minutes.

Nicol David wins fifth World Open title!

Malaysia’s Nicol David won a record-equalling 5th World Open squash title when she beat local hope Omneya Abdel Kawy in straight games (11-5, 11-8, 11-6) in the final Soho Square Women’s World Open at Sharm El Sheikh. Abdel Kawy, the fourth seed from Cairo who became the 1st Egyptian ever to reach the world final, was unable to get any control of the match. Nicol David became the dominant force in women’s world squash shortly after the retirement of Sarah Fitz-Gerald, the distinguished Australian who first notched up a fifth World Open title in 2002.

Ramy Ashour takes the first ROWE British Grand Prix title!

Egypt’s world No1 Ramy Ashour (pic front) beat England’s James Willstrop 11-7, 3-11, 11-3, 11-5 in the final of the ROWE British Grand Prix 2010 to win the biggest title in Europe this year. Ashour was in full command of the game even if Willstrop managed to take the 2nd game to level. From the start of the 3rd game the 22-year-old Egyptian accelerated the pace and Willstrop was not able to follow. After 40 minutes and some prize-giving speeches later Ashour proudly presented the trophy.

Magic Ashour secured his place in the British Grand Prix final!!

22-years old Egyptian Ramy Ashour (pic le) needed all his magic skills to down 12-years elder Australian David Palmer (pic ri) in four very entertaining games to take the place in the final of the ROWE British Grand Prix. At 1:1 in games Ashour fought back after being 7-10 down to take the 3rd game on extra points. After 57 minutes Ashour take his first match-ball chance to overcome Palmer 5-11, 11-6, 13-11, 11-9.

Willstrop booked his final spot!

Fifth seed James Willstrop (pic le) survived an incident-packed semi-final of the ROWE British Grand Prix to beat fourth-seeded Frenchman Greg Gaultier 11-7, 11-9, 9-11, 5-11, 11-9 in 101 minutes to ensure his spot in Monday’s final. The match was up and down all the way – both needed injury breaks, both shouted to the referees, but only one could win – the Manchester crowd was very pleased.

Ashour takes last semi-finals spot!

In the last quarter-finals match of the ROWE British Grand Prix the 22-years old Egyptian Ramy Ashour (pic) had the 12-years elder Frenchman Thierry Lincou all over the show-glass-court in Manchester. After just 24 minutes Ashour secures his semi-finals spot, where he meet Australian veteran David Palmer.

Palmer made semis – Shabana retired!

Australian David Palmer (pic) won the clash of the World Champions, while Egyptian Amr Shabana was suffering on an injury and had to retire in the 2nd game. Palmer will meet the winner of the last quarter-final match at the ROWE British Grand Prix, either Frenchman Thierry Lincou or Egyptian Ramy Ashour.
