El Weleily & Momen took Malaysian Open titles!

Raneem El Weleily (le) and compatriot Tarek Momen (ri) secured all-Egyptian victory at the Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur.

Saving 2 match-balls in the dying stages of the game, unseeded Tarek Momen overcame 2nd seed Mohamed El Shorbagy in the 1st ever all-Egyptian final of the Malaysian Open to win 12-10, 6-11, 12-10, 8-11, 14-12 in dramatic 109 minutes match – and claimed the biggest title of his career.

Raneem El Weleily claimed an historic win over top seed Nicol David to prevent the No1 seed from achieving her 8th title in the Malaysian Open final. The world No.2 showed no fear coming up against David and demonstrated a cool head to take the title in 4 games 12-10, 11-13, 11-6, 11-2.


Momen sets up all-Egyptian Malaysian Open final!

Unseeded Egyptian Tarek Momen (ri) overcame a 1st game deficit in the semi-finals of the Malaysian Open before beating higher-ranked Spaniard Borja Golan (le) 13-15, 11-7, 11-6, 11-6 to set up the 1st ever all-Egyptian final in Kuala Lumpur.

Momen will face fellow countryman Mohamed El Shorbagy, the No2 seed who earlier beat Swiss No1 Nicolas Mueller. The match was the 1st PSA World Tour battle between 2 players who contested the world junior semi-finals in Switzerland in 2008. El Shorbagy, the world No8 twice had to come from behind against Mueller and finally clinched his 11-13, 11-7, 10-12, 11-8, 11-8 victory after 64 minutes.

El Weleily ends all-Malaysian final dream!

Egyptian Raneem El Weleily (ri) booked her place in the Malaysian Open Championships after ending the impressive run of Low Wee Wern (le) of Malaysia 11-8, 9-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-9 and destroyed the hopes of an all-Malaysian final in the shopping mall of Selangor..

El Weleily will now face Nicol David in the final after the home favourite came back from a game down to overcome a determined Laura Massaro 10-12, 11-6, 11-7, 11-8 after 52 minutes of play.

Golan downs Darwish in Malaysian Open upset!

Unseeded Spaniard Borja Golan celebrated an unexpected place in the semi-finals of the Malaysian Open in Selangor after ousting top-seeded Karim Darwish 11-3, 12-10 as Egyptian had to retire after the 2nd game caused by an ankle injury.

Golan will now meet a further Egyptian Tarek Momen, the world No19 from Cairo who put an end to home interest when he beat Malaysian Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan 11-8, 11-4, 11-13, 11-4 in 40 minutes.

There will be Egyptian interest in the other semi where No2 seed Mohamed El Shorbagy takes on the Swiss No1 Nicolas Mueller. World No8 El Shorbagy survived a thrilling 5-games match (11-8, 11-9, 1-11, 5-11, 11-8) against Finn Olli Tuominen,

It was the end of the road for brave qualifier Abdullah Al Muzayen in the other quarter-final where Mueller recovered from a game down to beat the Kuwaiti left-hander – who upset No3 seed Omar Mosaad in the earlier round – 10-12, 11-5, 11-4, 11-0 in 40 minutes.

Wern and David secured Malaysian home interest!

Low Wee Wern and Nicol David moved closer to ensuring an all-Malaysian final after both secured their semi-final spots in the CIMB Malaysian Squash Open in Selangor.

Wee Wern, the 22-year-old 11th seed continued her remarkable run as she downed world No.4 Jenny Duncalf in straight games 11-7, 11-5, 11-8. The Malaysian will go on to play No.2 seed Raneem El Weleily who recorded her first career win over Alison Waters of England 12-10, 5-11, 11-6, 11-3.

Malaysian world No1 Nicol David booked her semi place after beating Annie Au of Hong Kong 11-5, 15-13, 11-5. David will face England’s Laura Massaro, who overcame Egyptian teenager Nour El Sherbini 11-13, 11-5, 11-7, 11-3.

Rodriguez stops Avila in Cartagena Final!

Colombian squash star Miguel Angel Rodriguez brought Alfredo Avila’s giant-killing run in the Cartagena Open to an end when he beat the Mexican qualifier in straight games in the final in Colombia’s coastal city of Cartagena.

Avila, a 21-year-old from Mexico City ranked outside the world top 100, had reached the biggest PSA Tour final of his career after a succession of upsets – none more notable than his 4-game victory over top-seeded South African Stephen Coppinger.

Colombian No1 Rodriguez’s 11-8, 11-2, 11-2 in 37 minutes marks his 2nd Tour title in his 3rd successive final on home soil in 2 weeks and the 20th Tour title of his career.

Worms won European Club Championships in Prague!

Black & White Worms claimed the titles in the 2012 European Club Championships in the Czech Republic capital Prague.

A dramatic men’s final saw Black & White Worms, the 5th seeds, disappoint home hopes by defeating Buldoci Praha, the No4 seeds from Prague, 3/1 to win the European Squash Federation title for the 1st time.

Buldoci pulled off the shock of the tournament in the quarter-finals by ousting defending champions Paderborn, the German club which won the title for a record 7th time last year – beating Worms in the final.

The men’s final went down to the last match as David Palmer put Worms 1-0 ahead, Gregory Gaultier leveled for host Praha. Marcus Berrett put Worms back in front with a 3-0 win and Andre Haschker took the game Worms needed to become European Clubs champions.

Tarek Takes Colombian Crown!

The run of home hero Miguel Angel Rodriguez (le) came to an end in the final of the Colombian Open when Egypt’s Tarek Momen (ri) claimed the 3-11, 11-4, 11-3, 12-10 victory in the Colombian capital Bogota.

Unseeded Rodriguez, the Colombian No1, reached his 4th national open final – and the 27th Tour final of his career – after a sensational run which included upsets over the top seed and defending champion Mohamed El Shorbagy and 4th-seeded South African Stephen Coppinger.

But 3rd seed Momen was hungry for success in his maiden appearance in the long-established Tour event in South America to take his 2nd PSA Tour title of his career.
