Ashour on fire to beat Pilley!

Nick Matthew did not mess around very much in his 2nd round match against the Egyptian Mohd Ali Anwar Reda, when the English world No1 took the victory after 38 minutes to take his quarter-finals spot. In the last match tonight, titleholder Ramy Ashour (pic le) and Australian fellow Cameron Pilley (pic ri) went for a fascinating shoot-out to please the crowd. But Pilley had to accept, that Ashour loves this type of game and took advantage of it to beat him in 4 games 11-7, 11-8,12-14, 11-3 after 59 minutes of play.

Gaultier in control over Selby!

To refer to one of our I love squash fans feedback we split the games comments concerning the ROWE British Grand Prix. It was Karim Darwish who had the better end after 47 minutes of play in the all-Egyptian match against Tarek Momen (11-7, 4-11, 11-7, 11-4). A quite controversy match with a lot of referee reviews was going on between Frenchman Greg Gaultier (white shirt) and Daryl Selby of England. After Selby leveled to 1:1 Gaultier got back in control and was taking the victory taking the (11-4, 10-12, 11-2, 11-4).

Grant downs Willstrop at the ROWE British Grand Prix!

The 2nd round action of the ROWE British Grand Prix has been started by an upset, as Egyptian Omar Mosaad took out experienced French former world champion Thierry Lincou in 5 games (11-7, 6-11, 2-11, 11-5, 11-4) after 66 Minutes. Another Egyptian was following Mosaad into the quarters when 4-times world champion Amr Shabana broke down the storm of German Simon Rosner. After 2 tough games to Shabana’s advantage and one game taken by the German champion, the Egyptian was able to close out the match in 4 games 11-9, 14-12, 4-11, 11-7.

Biggest upset of today so far was the defeat of English world No4 James Willstrop (pic ri), as he got beaten by his compatriot Adrian Grant (pic le). After coming back from 1 game down Grant clawed back to take one of the best victories of his career in a 83-minutes encounter (10-12, 11-7, 11-9, 11-7). In the 4th match of the day the crowd saw Englishman Peter Barker see-off Azlan Iskandar from Malaysia in straight games (11-4, 11-6, 11-6).

Seeds save through in Manchester!

The last 4 matches of the 1st round of the ROWE British Grand Prix have been quite fast. Except Karim Darwish (EGY, pic ri) who needed 67 minutes an 4 games (9-11, 11-8, 11-5, 11-8) to overcome Australian Stewart Boswell (pic le) after recovering from 1 game down. Frenchman Greg Gaultier was in excellent form, when he beats India’s Saurav Ghosal in straight games (11-4, 11-5, 11-2) after 47 minutes of play.

Australian fellow Cameron Pilley was able to undercut Gaultier’s time by 5 minutes, as he eased through (11-6, 11-6, 11-5) against Aamir Atlas Khan from Pakistan. Titleholder Ramy Ashour from Egypt was in superb shape as he did not mess around very long with England’s Chris Ryder, who did not much wrong – Ashour was just to good. After minutes Ashour had the straight games victory under his belt.

Momen beat Walker at the ROWE British Grand Prix!

The 2nd day of the ROWE British Grand Prix 1st round action brought up some exciting squash. In the 1st match Egyptian Tarek Momen produced the 1st up-set when he beat higher ranked Alister Walker from Botswana in 4 games (11-8, 10-12, 11-6, 11-6). Omar Mosaad secured more Egyptian interest in the 2nd round as he overcame Englishmen Jonathan Kemp in a tough 5-games encounter (14-12, 8-11, 11-5, 10-12, 11-9).

And it was French veteran Thierry Lincou who used all his experience to held the upper hand over World Junior Champion Marwan El Shorbagy of Egypt in straight games (11-6, 11-3, 11-7). The last match of today’s 1st session showed an attacking Swiss Champion Nicolas Mueller (pic le) to lead more than 20 places higher ranked Englishman Daryl Selby (pi cri) by 2 games. But world No11 clawed back to level the match and had the better end in the final game (5-11, 9-11, 11-2, 11-9, 11-8).

Barker, Wilstrop, Shabana and Matthew went through!

In the 2nd half of the 1st day’s action of the ROWE British Grand Prix all matches does look more one-sided. Even if James Willstrop (pic ri) had to drop the 3rd game, he was well in control of Spaniard Borja Golan (pic le, 11-9, 11-4, 9-11, 11-3). 4-times world champion Amr Shabana got back from 1 game down to overcome his Egyptian fellow countryman Hisham Ashour 7-11, 11-4, 11-7, 11-2. The 2 Englishmen Peter Barker and world No1 Nick Matthew had a quite easy go to beat Stephen Coppinger (11-7, 11-4, 11-3) from South Africa and Jens Schoor (11-3, 11-3, 11-6) from Germany.

1st round action of the ROWE British Grand Prix started!

The 1st 4 matches of the 1st day’s 1st round action of the ROWE British Grand Prix are done. All matches have been tough encounters, as we saw a 68-minutes straight games win from German Simon Rosner over Tom Richards (12-10, 11-8, 12-10). Before Adrian Grant from England had the upper hand over Fin Olli Tuominen (6-11, 11-7, 11-13, 11-2, 11-3). Even Azlan Iskandar’s (MAS) straight games victory over Egyptian Mohammed Abbas (11-4, 11-3, 12-10) did not look easy. ROWE British Grand Prix qualifiers ready for Manchester!

A 2nd successive straight games qualifying win in qualification in Wolverhampton sees local hero Chris Ryder (pic) boost to 8 the number of Englishmen competing in the ROWE British Grand Prix which gets underway on Monday, the 19th in Manchester. Ryder who beat Henrik Mustonen of Finland (11-9, 11-5, 11-4 ) led a cosmopolitan group of players celebrating successes in the qualifying finals – including a German, Spaniard, Swiss, South African and three Egyptians.

It was teenager Marwan El Shorbagy who had cause for the biggest celebration after beating England’s Robbie Temple to earn his 1st ever appearance in a PSA World Series event. Compatriots Tarek Momen and Mohammed Abbas also survived the qualifiers – bringing the Egyptian interest in the main draw to nine players. Abbas, a former world No13, needed five games to see off France’s Mathieu Castagnet 8-11, 12-10, 7-11, 11-7, 11-8 in an 88-minute marathon, while 23-year-old Momen was also fully extended before overcoming top-ranked Scot Alan Clyne 11-9, 11-3, 7-11, 9-11, 11-7.
