Top four seeds into Goiania semis!

The top 4 seeds made it through to the semi-finals of the Goiania Open in Brazil after surviving contrasting quarter-finals. Hopes for local success were kept firmly alive when top seed Rafael F Alarcon (pic) booked his place in the last 4 without lifting a racket. After producing a notable upset in the previous round, English qualifier Steven London was unable take his Goiania bid any further, and conceded the match to Alarcon due to an injury. Brazilian Alarcon, the world No52 will now face Yann Perrin for a place in the final after the 3rd-seeded Frenchman despatched Paraguay’s Esteban Casarino 8-11, 11-4, 11-4, 11-6. Malaysia’s Kamran Khan took more than an hour to overcome South African Clinton Leeuw 12-10, 11-7, 5-11, 11-6. The 4th seed moves forward to line up against No2 seed Campbell Grayson. The 25-year-old New Zealander brushed aside Argentina qualifier Hernan D’Arcangelo 11-6, 11-1, 11-4.

El Torky & Khalifa claim Egyptian Double in Cairo!

Amr Khaled Khalifa (pic) and Heba El Torky made it a home nation double in the Egyptian Circuit No1 after winning the finals of the inaugural international squash circuit in Cairo. Unseeded Khalifa continued his giant-killing run through the men’s event by despatching 2nd-seeded fellow countryman Omar Abdel Aziz, the world No42, in straight games (11-7, 11-9, 11-7). The final of the women’s event was a more dramatic affair, in which South African outsider Siyoli Waters twice led the Egyptian favourite in a bid to win her maiden Tour title. But El Torky, the 20-year-old world No36 from Alexandria, held her nerve to keep 4th-seeded Waters at bay. And after 59 minutes, the Egyptian clinched victory over her 28-year-old opponent, winning 6-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-4, 11-5.

Now the world No64 Waters will face favourite Heba El Torky, the world No36, who had to come back from a game down to beat England’s 3rd seed Emily Whitlock, the 17-year-old European junior champion, 8-11, 11-5, 11-2, 11-3. Unseeded Amr Khaled Khalifa will face 2nd seed Omar Abdel Aziz in the final of the men’s event after the Egyptian pair survived contrasting semi-finals. Khalifa, the reigning world junior champion, needed 54 minutes to overcome compatriot Omar Abdel Meguid, also unseeded, 6-11, 11-5, 11-2, 11-2. Aziz, the world No42, made it into the final after just a few points into the 2nd game of the other semi when his Italian opponent Amr Swelim retired injured with the score at 11-2, 1-3.
